Editorial

Fashion

For every fashion editorial I’ve worked on, I’ve also served as the guiding force as well as the on-site stylist and market editor.

My responsibility was to ideate at least 12 major fashion feature editorial concepts per year — 8 pages for each issue— plus smaller pieces as shown below and front-of-book content.

  • Create content for 20-24 pages of each issue

  • Call in samples and borrow items from showrooms for shoots

  • Maintain upwards of 100 vendor relationships

  • Book model and photographer talent

  • Establish vision for the shoot, secure props and anything else needed

  • Scout and secure locations

  • Create call sheets and flow of shoot working with Art Director and photographer

  • Working very collaboratively with Art Director, run day of shoot

  • Track all pricing and stockist details for shopping guide in back of the issue

  • Safely return back all the items we borrowed (a masterclass in logistics) in the condition we received them

  • Manage Fashion Assistants (Hired 7, 4 promoted to full-time employees including my successor)

  • Below is a small sampling of what I worked on with Pregnancy & Newborn magazine, a national publication with about 600,000 readers when I was there.

Factory Girl

The concept for this fashion shoot was focused around the art. I negotiated with two major artists to borrow paintings and use them as the backdrops for the fashion. The model was a delight to work with and completely embraced the vision. We worked with her during two pregnancies.

Around the World in 280 Days

280 days is the length of the average pregnancy, and it worked perfectly to evoke international travel a la the Jules Verne novel reference. I developed the concept to showcase a variety of fashion looks and reinforce that pregnant people can enjoy travel while expecting. Working with the Art Director, we came up with all the props we’d need and planned to use two different color backdrops to make the styles pop off the page.

Front of Book Pieces and Accessories Features

The fashion department was also responsible for front-of-book editorial and smaller features. Accessories are a great option for these since pregnant people often find that as their size changes, fits become difficult. But a cute bangle or bag always fits. I developed unique and interesting ways to showcase these items including the jewelry as treat shown below as well as how to wear items now (while pregnant) and later (post-partum).

Covers

Occasionally, we did a separate photo shoot for the cover, but usually, we came up with a concept that could be used for both. That meant that the model, look, and background had to be perfect since it was the first impression we’d make on the newsstand. Check out more of my covers.
